A man from Winsford, Cheshire, has been jailed for causing serious injury by careless driving and acting with intent to pervert the course of justice.
Anthony Abbott, 45, plead guilty to both charges and was sentenced on April 23 at Chester Crown Court. He received a three-year custodial sentence and was banned from driving for four years and six months.
The accident occurred when a local man, walking home from New Year’s Eve celebrations on December 31, 2025, was struck by Abbott’s Volkswagen on the A54 High Street in Winsford. Driving through traffic lights at high speed, Abbott collided with the pedestrian as he crossed the road, causing life-changing injuries. Emergency services took the injured man to hospital for treatment, where medics amputated his severely damaged left leg.
After failing to stop and leaving the injured man in the road, Abbott then took steps to conceal the Volkswagen and replace it with an identical one. A 42-year-old man, who assisted Abbott in removing the Volkswagen from its hiding place on an industrial estate in Crewe, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and acting with intent to pervert the course of justice. Although charged with both offences, he was found not guilty.
