Cambridgeshire Police have arrested a 36-year-old man under suspicion of causing death by careless driving, following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist.
On the evening of Thursday, April 23, a white Kia EV4 collided with a silver Honda motorcycle on the A1303 in Cambridgeshire. The motorcyclist, a 62-year-old man from Newmarket, Suffolk, died at the scene.
The driver of the Kia, a 36-year-old man from Stevenage, did not suffer any serious injuries in the accident. He was arrested and bailed, pending further investigation. Police are seeking to establish the cause of the collision, and have appealed for help from any members of the public who witnessed it or who may have relevant dashcam footage.
The offence of causing death by careless driving is an ‘either-way offence’; it can be heard in either the Magistrates’ Court or the Crown Court. The court must prove that the defendant’s driving was careless (meaning it fell below the standard of a competent and careful driver), and that the defendant’s careless driving caused someone’s death. The more serious cases may be sent to the Crown Court, which can impose much higher sentences.
