Devon driver receives suspended sentence after killing pensioner

A pizza delivery driver has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving at a trial at Truro Crown Court.

On November 12, 2025, Colin Williams was given a sentence of eight months imprisonment, suspended for two years, and was banned from driving for 12 months.

Judge Carr, sentencing, described the case as “most difficult and tragic.” Williams, from Horseshoe Drive, Newton Abbot, had suffered a momentary lapse of concentration, leading to tragic consequences. The judge noted that Williams had expressed true remorse for the incident.

In April 2024, Williams, 43, was driving along Trelyon Avenue, St.Ives, when he suffered a sneezing fit. He attempted to dry his eyes, but failed to slow down or stop. Driving with impaired vision, he struck two elderly pedestrians, Daphne and David Clark. David, 83, died in hospital from head injuries. His wife, Daphne, suffered life changing injuries.

The court heard that Williams, who had no previous convictions, had tried to help the couple at the scene of the accident, and had admitted his actions to the police. Nevertheless, his failure to slow down or stop his vehicle amounted to driving without due care and attention.
