Police officer gets final warning after injuring pedestrian

24/05/2026

A Lincoln police officer who knocked down a pedestrian has received a written final warning from the police force.

On November 4, 2024, PC Aodan O’Neill responded to an emergency call from a colleague requiring urgent assistance. Activating the blue lights and siren on his marked police car, he drove toward the scene of the emergency at speeds of up to 58 mph.

A pedestrian, who was listening to music on a portable device, began to cross Broadgate in Lincoln City Centre, completely unaware of O’Neill’s car speeding toward him. The police car struck the pedestrian, causing minor injuries, from which he has now fully recovered.

In March 2026, O’Neill was convicted of dangerous driving, and sentenced to a 12-month Community Order by Nottingham Crown Court. He must complete 150 hours of unpaid work, and is prohibited from driving for a period of 12 months.

PC O’Neill attended a police misconduct hearing on May 15, where he was found guilty of gross misconduct, and was issued with a written final warning, which will be active for four years.

The case highlights the requirement that police officers, when carrying out their duties, are expected to maintain the same standards of driving as the general public.
