An 18-year-old from Lydiate was handed a substantial custodial sentence at Preston Crown Court as a result of an incident that occurred in December 2024.

Joe McAldon, who was 17 at the time of the offence, had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of causing death by dangerous driving, with two additional counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He had passed his driving test just a few days before the fatal collision.

The court heard how on December 11, 2024, McAldon had picked up 3 friends in a Vauxhall Corsa and taken them for a drive near Clieves Hill in Aughton, Lancashire. While driving back down the hill along Fir Tree Lane, he lost control of the vehicle on a bend and crashed into a stone wall just after 9 pm. Emergency services were called and all four boys were taken to hospital, but sadly 17-year-old Max Greenhouse died from his injuries shortly after being admitted. McAldon and the other two boys were treated for serious injuries. The police investigation revealed that McAldon was driving at 57 mph, significantly above the 40-mph speed limit. At the hearing on May 15, the court gave McAldon a 4-year custodial sentence and an 8-month driving ban.
