Appearing before Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court on January 14, 19-year-old Daniel Davis was fined after pleading guilty to a charge of driving without due care and attention.
Davis, from Llanrhystud, was caught driving carelessly along the A457 in Aberaeron in November last year. The court added five penalty points to his driving licence, and ordered him to pay an £80 fine, £85 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £32, totalling £197.
Davis’ driving was judged to have fallen “below the minimum expected standard of a competent and careful driver”, which brought about the charge of driving without due care and attention. Standard punishments for this include the issuing of a fine and the addition of between three and nine penalty points to the driver’s licence or, for more serious cases, disqualification.
The maximum fine for this offence is £2500. The severity of the penalty will reflect the court’s view of the seriousness of the offence. Once a driver’s points total 12 or more in a three-year period, they will face a mandatory driving disqualification of at least six months, in line with totting up rules.
