At a hearing in Preston Crown Court on December 9, a truck driver was sentenced to two years in custody for causing the death of a 6-year-old girl by careless driving.
Stephen Worden, 61, had been charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving, and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Although found not guilty to these charges at a trial in October, Worden’s guilty pleas to the lesser offences of causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving were accepted by the court and he was sentenced accordingly. He was additionally banned from driving for a period of two years.
The tragic incident occurred on the A6 Garstang Road in Bilsborrow at around 1:15 pm on August 15, 2023. Worden was driving a flatbed truck when he collided with a stationary double decker bus and veered off onto the grass verge, where some children had just disembarked. His vehicle struck three of the children, Millie Gribble, aged 6, and two older children, now aged 15 and 16. The two other children were seriously injured in the accident. Millie, who sustained severe head injuries, was taken to Alder Hey Hospital, where she died six days later.
