A 32-year-old driver has been jailed after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.
On October 6, 2024, Victor Rotundu lost control of his vehicle while driving on the M32, veering off the road and crashing into a tree, killing passenger Andrei Grigutu. Mr. Grigutu, 37, of Bristol, was a friend of Rotundu, and was declared dead at the scene of the accident. Rotundu was also injured, but was discharged from hospital following emergency treatment.
Toxicology reports show that Rotundu’s alcohol levels were well above the legal limit at the time of the accident. At the time of testing, it was determined that he had no less than 140umg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. However, a toxicology expert’s calculations established that Rotundu would have had 222umg of alcohol per 100ml of blood when the accident occurred, almost three times the legal limit of 80umg.
Rotundu, appearing in Bristol Crown Court on October 24, 2025, pleaded guilty to the offence of causing death by careless driving. He was sentenced to 5 years and 2 months imprisonment, and was banned from driving for 7 years and 4 months, after which he must take an extended retest if he wishes to continue to drive.
