Reckless driver who caused wife’s death gets lengthy prison sentence

01/07/2025

A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years and 9 months prison at Lincoln Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of causing death by dangerous driving and four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Aston Kurtev had been driving his Vauxhall Safira along the A16 between the Kirton and Sutterton roundabouts on March 4, 2024, when his car collided head-on with a Vauxhall Scirocco travelling in the opposite direction.

At his sentencing hearing on June 26, 2025, the court heard how Kurtev, fearing that he and his four passengers would be late for work, began to drive erratically. According to witnesses, he had been dangerously forcing his way through traffic, making high-risk overtaking manoeuvres prior to the collision.

He had overtaken a vehicle and collided with an oncoming vehicle, killing his wife, 39-year-old Sofka Mitkova, and seriously injuring his three other passengers, as well as the driver of the other car, who had attempted evasive manoeuvres but failed to avoid the crash.

In addition to the prison sentence, Kurtev was banned from driving for 12 years and 2 months and must take an extended re-test before being allowed to resume driving.
