A man has been sentenced to prison for seven and a half years after pleading guilty causing death by dangerous driving as a result of a fatal crash in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
At 11.36 pm on November 26, 2023, emergency services were called out to an incident on Kimberworth Road in Rotherham. Arriving at the scene, police found that a Volkswagen Passat, driven by Dean Rowbottom, had crashed into a row of parked cars with considerable force. Rowbottom suffered minor injuries, but his 47-year-old passenger died at the scene. The parked cars were unoccupied at the time of the crash.
Rowbottom, 27, from Rotherham, refused to undergo an eyesight test as required under section 96(2) of RTA 1988. He did, however, submit to a breath test at the scene, and was found to be almost three times over the legal alcohol limit. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving or being in charge with alcohol concentration above prescribed limit and refusing to submit to statutory eyesight test.
At a hearing held at Sheffield Crown Court in March, Rowbottom pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, and was handed his sentence at his hearing on June 16.
