A 30-year-old man from Radford has been charged with driving without due care and attention and using a handheld phone while driving.
He was also charged with driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
At around 3:25 pm on August 13, police officers spotted the man as he rode past them on an e-bike in Bilborough, Nottinghamshire. He did not appear to be pedalling the bicycle, which was travelling at an estimated 30mph. He was using a hand-held phone, and his lack of attention to the road almost caused him to collide with another cyclist.
UK law specifies that an electrically-assisted bicycle should not be able to travel at more than 15.5 mph without pedalling. The suspect, however, had fitted the e-bike with a throttle, enabling it to self-propel at much faster speeds. Any bike that can exceed the specified speed limit is classed as a motor vehicle, and therefore requires a driving licence and insurance.
Following his arrest, the man was charged and bailed to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on September 8. Inspector Gordon Fenwick of Nottinghamshire Police has reiterated the force’s firm commitment to improving road safety and to enforcing safe road use on users of all vehicles, including e-bikes and e-scooters.
