Lorry driver admits causing death of mother

01/03/2026

At a hearing in Peterborough Crown Court on February 24, lorry driver Kevin Miller, 71, admitted to causing the death of a young mother in the Willingham area of Cambridgeshire.

Miller, of Gayton Road, King’s Lynn, was initially charged with causing death by dangerous driving. After pleading not guilty, his case went to trial Peterborough Crown Court in early 2025, but the trial was halted in April after more evidence of the incident came to light. Miller has now pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving (driving without due care and attention), and will be sentenced on that basis at a further hearing on April 14.

The horrific accident occurred on September 22, 2022, when Miller was transporting scrap metal from King’s Lynn docks to a pair of depots in Cambridgeshire and Essex belonging to Network Rail. As he drove through Willingham village, some crane equipment became dislodged, causing it to hang over the edge of the trailer.

30-year-old Rebecca Ableman and her 2-year-old daughter, Autumn, had just emerged from a farm shop in Station Road, when Rebecca was struck by the loose crane. She died three weeks later from head and brain injuries. Her daughter was unhurt in the incident.
