Man told to expect jail sentence after killing pensioner

At a hearing in Birmingham Crown Court on October 9, 2025, 29-year-old Makyle Taggart was told to expect prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Judge Paul Farrer, KC, stressed that a custodial sentence was inevitable. He imposed an interim driving ban in the meantime, and released Taggart on bail.

Suggesting that underlying mental health issues were a significant factor in the offence, Taggart’s defence counsel has requested psychiatric and pre-sentence reports. Taggart must attend a sentencing hearing on December 18, when the length of his prison term and driving ban will be decided.

On February 9 this year, 71-year-old Wynford Griffiths was walking near Stechford Retail Park when he was struck by Taggart’s BMW X4, and died at the scene. The accident occurred near the junction of Audley Road and Flaxley Road at around 9pm. Mr. Griffiths’ family have issued a victim impact statement, describing their sense of loss following the death of Wynford.
