Manchester brothers stand trial accused of causing death of young father

15/09/2025

Brothers Abubakr Ben Yusaf and Umar Ben Yusaf are currently on trial at Mold Crown Court, accused of causing the death of a young father from Powys.

On November 16, 2024, the brothers were driving separate cars on the A483 near Welshpool when one of them collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. The accident took the life of Rhys Jenkins, from Deuddw, and seriously injured his nine-year-old son, Ioan, who was then airlifted to Alder Hey Hospital in Merseyside for emergency treatment. The Ben Yusuf brothers fled the scene but were later arrested in Welshpool.

Witnesses at the trial have provided statements describing the reckless driving that the prosecution allege led to the tragic accident. The brothers, who appeared to be racing one another, were observed making dangerous overtaking manoeuvres. One witness described victim Mr. Jenkins as driving “entirely properly”. Although only Abubakr Ben Yusuf’s BMW X3 actually collided with Mr. Jenkins’ car, both brothers have been accused of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and causing death while uninsured. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the trial is ongoing.
