Javonnie Tavener, 23, was remanded in custody at Birmingham Crown Court on 30 July after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.

Tavener also admitted causing death while driving without insurance, and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving. He will be sentenced at a later hearing.

The tragic incident occurred on 14 April 2024, as 4-year-old Mayar Yahia was walking home from Eid celebrations with her family and friends. Tavener made a careless overtaking manoeuvre while driving along Upper Highgate Street, causing his Vauxhall Corsa to collide with another car.

The Corsa then careered into Mayar and her companions who were walking on the nearby pavement.

Paramedics were called, but Mayar died at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. Two women were also seriously injured in the collision.

In a poignant victim impact statement, Mayar’s father described the “irreplaceable void” created by his beloved daughter’s death.

Causing death by driving without due care and attention can lead to custodial sentences, with a maximum sentence of five years available for the most serious cases.
