A driver has been handed a six-month driving ban and charged over £300 in fines after breaking a variable speed limit.
On August 9, 2024, 54-year-old Helen Powell was driving her BMW on the M4 between junctions 6 and 7 near Slough. Automatic speed cameras spotted her car travelling at 58mph when a variable speed limit of 50mph was in force.
At a hearing on July 7 at High Wycombe Magistrates Court, Powell pleaded guilty to one count of breaking a variable speed limit. Six penalty points were added to her licence, leading to her being handed a mandatory driving prohibition for a period of six months. She was also ordered to pay a fine of £184, plus £120 in court costs and a surcharge of £74.
Variable speed limits are displayed on gantries above the carriageway. Speed limits displayed inside a red circle are legally enforceable, and those found breaking them will face penalty points and fines. Drivers must be sure they are aware of the current speed limit, which can vary according to traffic flow and other road conditions. Driving at a speed above the displayed limit is an offence, and with increasingly accurate camera technology, speeding drivers are likely to be caught.
