Appearing in Preston Crown Court on September 3, a driver was sentenced to four years imprisonment for causing the death of a teenager. He was also banned from driving for a period of seven years.
The defendant, a 21-year-old from Walney in Cumbria, had earlier also pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
On Friday, June 6, 2025, the defendant made a reckless overtaking manoeuvre while driving an Audi S4 near Ulverston. Overtaking several vehicles, and failing properly to assess the road or traffic conditions ahead, a collision occurred with another vehicle, a Volkswagen, as it made a right-turn into a parking area.
The Volkswagen’s driver was seriously injured and taken to hospital by air for emergency treatment. The Volkswagen’s passenger, a 19-year-old man from Ulverston, was declared dead at the scene. A passenger in the Audi also sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash.
Claire Whatman, Detective Constable at Cumbria Constabulary, has urged drivers to avoid making risky manoeuvres that can lead to serious consequences. She emphasised the importance of driving at appropriate speeds and making adequate assessments of the road ahead before overtaking other vehicles.
