On September 2, Greater Manchester Police’s recently formed team known as Transport Policing and Crime Command (TPACC) acted upon reports from the M66 of dangerous driving.
A group of high-powered supercars was thought to be driving recklessly at high speeds and performing hazardous stunts, including wheel-spinning, weaving through lanes and slowing to 17 mph speeds.
The convoy involved in the incident were tracked to the M62, where police brought two Lamborghinis to a stop as they left the motorway. Meanwhile, the other vehicles involved in the incident were eventually halted in Rochdale.
Making use of changed legislation, police captured five Lamborghini cars and one Mercedes G-Wagon, citing the Police Reform Act 2002’s Section 59. New changes to this section mean that police can now seize vehicles first without issuing a warning. The drivers involved in this incident are now facing a range of charges for various motoring offences.
Chief Inspector Danny Kabal from TPACC reinforced his team’s determination to tackle this sort of behaviour on the public highways. Kabal advised that people who treat public roads like a racetrack should see this outcome as a clear warning, and that those who drive in this way risk having their vehicles seized and facing prosecution.
