A 20-year-old man from Birkenhead has been sent to prison for causing the death of a 17-year-old boy.
The man had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving. He was also sentenced for an unrelated arson offence.
He was handed two consecutive custodial sentences, receiving five years and four months for the driving offence and six months for the arson. He also received a disqualification from driving for a period of five years, commencing upon his release from custody, and will need to take an extended retest before being allowed to drive again.
On November 30, 2024, the defendant was riding an illegal electric bicycle along Hoole Road, on the Woodchurch estate. The court was shown CCTV footage of the accident, providing clear evidence that he was riding the bicycle in a dangerous manner.
The defendant’s electric bicycle attained speeds of 27-33 mph in a 20-mph zone. He performed a wheelie immediately before colliding with another bicycle ridden by a close friend, who died from injuries sustained in the collision. The wreckage of the defendant’s bicycle was removed from the scene of the accident and is yet to be recovered. The police found evidence that the defendant had used cannabis prior to the accident.
