Two motorists, whose racing exploits have been found to have caused the deaths of a mother and her daughter, have both been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.
On January 16, 2023, a 27-year-old woman and her 4-year-old daughter were killed while walking to the child’s nursery in Leeds. The driver of the Audi TTRS which collided with the victims admitted to causing their deaths by dangerous driving, and is now awaiting sentence. A second driver, who appeared to be racing the Audi driver, has also been found guilty of the same offence following a week-long trial at Leeds Crown Court, which concluded on August 28.
The court heard how the two drivers, who were previously unknown to each other, had conversed through open car windows while waiting at a set of traffic lights. They then appeared to engage in an impromptu car race.
The second driver, who was driving a BMW 1 Series, recorded the Audi on his phone as it sped away from the traffic lights. He then gave chase, reaching 89mph in a 40mph zone. He was close behind the Audi as it struck the two pedestrians. The victims were taken to hospital, but later died from their injuries.
Both drivers will return to court for sentencing on October 26. They have been told to expect lengthy jail terms.
