Leeds man denies dangerous driving charge

18/08/2026

A 40-year-old man from Kippax, Leeds, appeared in Leeds Crown Court on August 11 charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink.

Entering a plea of not guilty, he was given conditional bail, and told he must attend court for a trial, which is expected to last four days.

The incident from which the trial originates occurred on February 18, 2025, when a 74-year-old pedestrian died after being struck by a Honda Civic on Barnsdale Road in Castleford. The car was travelling towards Allerton Bywater, and hit the victim in an area close to the bridge over the Aire & Calder Navigation canal. The victim died at the scene of the accident. The defendant, who was driving the Honda, failed to stop, but was later arrested by West Yorkshire Police. He was bailed pending further investigations and subsequently charged.

The victim’s family have expressed their sorrow at the loss of a much-loved father and grandfather, who was well-known in the community for his involvement with a local rugby club.

Judge Neil Clark advised the court that December 11, 2028, was the next available trial date. This means that the trial is scheduled to begin almost 3 years and 10 months after the victim’s death.
