A pair of offers with the Metropolitan Police have been charged with driving offences as a result of an incident that ended with the death of a pregnant woman.

On October 17, 2024, a 38-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed in Eltham, southeast London, when her vehicle collided with an unmarked police car driven by PC Chris Johnson. The child died at the scene and the woman was taken to hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Johnson, who was responding to a separate incident at the time of the collision, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Former PC Danny Tomkins, who was responding to the same incident in another police vehicle, has also been charged with dangerous driving.

Following a mandatory referral by the Metropolitan Police, the Independent Office for Police Conduct carried out a thorough investigation of the incident. Evidence gathered in this investigation was passed on to the CPS in October 2025. After reviewing the evidence, the CPS decided to charge both officers. Johnson and Tomkins will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 28.
