A motorist has been sent to prison after admitting the charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Ross Jackson, 26, was handed a 28-month custodial sentence at a hearing held on January 27 in Newcastle Crown Court. The court heard how he had overtaken between 10 and 15 vehicles at high speed, before colliding with an oncoming Audi Q3. The incident occurred on the A697 near Wooler, Northumberland, on November 10, 2023.

Jackson’s VW Golf struck the Audi at 98mph, flipped in the air and cartwheeled, hitting a number of other vehicles. His dog, Mabel, was flung from the car and seriously injured, and later had to be put-down. The driver of the Audi sustained whiplash and post-traumatic stress disorder, rendering her unable to work and resulting in the loss of her two businesses. Her mother, who was a front seat passenger, was seriously injured in the crash, sustaining a broken breastbone and ribs. The accident has seriously affected the quality of her life. She described her condition as “living in near constant pain.”

In addition to the jail sentence, Jackson was banned from driving for four years and two months, after which he must take an extended re-test should he wish to resume driving.
