Northamptonshire Police report lively start to Operation Limit

27/01/2026

Between December 1, 2025 and January 2, 2026, Northamptonshire Police took part in the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s ‘Operation Limit’, a strategy proactively targeting road safety during the festive season.

Conducted annually by police forces across England and Wales, Operation Limit addresses the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours identified as key causes of road deaths: speeding, careless driving, driving without a seatbelt, drink and drug driving and driving while using a hand-held mobile phone. Although the operation aims to improve road safety in general, its main focus is on tackling drink and drug driving.

Overall, Northamptonshire Police reported 110 total arrests as part of the scheme.

For example, 25-year-old Oliver Vials was one of sixteen drivers charged with drink driving during the period from December 5 to December 10. Appearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court on December 22, Vials pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving otherwise than with a licence and driving without third-party insurance. His alcohol level was recorded as 55 micrograms per 1000 millilitres of breath, well above the legal limit of 35 micrograms. He was disqualified from driving for 14 months, fined £266 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £266 victim surcharge. He was additionally ordered to pay a £400 fine for driving without adequate insurance.

Police across Britain are focusing heavily on drink and drug driving, as well as mobile phone driving offences, as they strive to reduce the numbers of road deaths on the nation’s highways.
