Christopher Jackson, 27, from Walton Road, Southampton, has appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

At the hearing on January 5, 2026, Jackson was additionally charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He did not enter any pleas, but was given conditional bail and ordered to appear at the Old Bailey on February 2. If convicted, he could face a substantial prison sentence.

The charges relate to an accident on the Strand on March 18, 2025, in which 20-year-old philosophy and physics student Aalia Mahomed was tragically killed. A van driven by Jackson is alleged to have collided with a metal gate, knocking it off its hinges, and then struck the bench where Ms. Mahomed was sitting. A woman and man in their 20s were also seriously injured in the incident. Aalia’s family have offered heartfelt tributes to her, describing her as a “bright, kind and beautiful soul.” At an event held on July 31, Aalia’s younger brother unveiled a commemorative plaque beneath a cherry blossom planted as a memorial to his beloved sister.
