Lorry driver appears in court over death of Ryanair pilots

A lorry driver is awaiting a trial accused of causing the deaths of two pilots.

Anthony Burns, 64, is accused of causing the deaths of two young Ryanair pilots in a major incident on the M62. Burns, of Headington Road, Upton, had earlier been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. A plea and trial preparation hearing will take place at Liverpool Crown Court on December 23rd.

On July 11, 2024, Captain Matthew Greenhalgh, 28, and senior first officer Jamie Fernandes, 24, were on their way to Liverpool John Lennon Airport when their taxi was involved in pile-up with two lorries. The incident occurred on the west-bound carriageway between junctions 8 and 7. Both pilots died at the scene, and the taxi driver was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

The families of both pilots expressed their deep sense of loss and their pride at the achievements of the two young men, who had aspired to become pilots since early childhood. Ryanair plan to set-up a “Matt Greenhalgh and Jamie Fernandes Memorial Award” to be offered each year to an outstanding cadet pilot.
