A vicar based in Lincolnshire has been banned from driving for two years following a conviction for drink driving.
Rev. Sion Hughes Carew, 40, an expert in canon law, had previously worked at Church House in Westminster in the Church of England’s legal department. He was ordained deacon in 2021 and priest the following year, taking up a parish in the Lincoln Diocese.
The incident occurred following a social event at the Bishop’s Palace in Lincoln. Hughes Carew had, without permission, taken the bishop’s Kia Sportage, and crashed it on Vine Street, about half a mile from the cathedral. He collided twice with a parked car. Both cars were wrecked in the incident, but no one was injured. Hughes Carew’s alcohol level was almost threetimes the legal limit at the time of the accident.
Pleading guilty to drink driving in Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on October 30, 2025, Hughes Carew was fined £873 and ordered to pay fees and costs of £434. He was banned from driving for two years. He now faces a formal disciplinary procedure in line with the church’s Clergy Discipline Measure policy.
