Lincolnshire driver punished for driving while banned

30/09/2025

A Lincolnshire man has been given extended driving ban and threatened with prison after being caught driving while already banned.

Ian Jarvis, 49, of Chapel St Leonard’s, appeared in Boston Magistrates’ Court on September 10, 2025, charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Jarvis had been banned from driving on April 22 as a result of the totting-up rule, which states that a driver whose licence has been endorsed with 12 or more penalty points within a 3-year period will face a mandatory driving prohibition of at least six months.

Jarvis’ driving ban was still active on July 27, 2025 when he was caught driving a Ford Transit van after a member of the public had given the police a tip-off. He pleaded guilty to both charges. The district judge made it clear that if Jarvis were to commit any further offences of driving while disqualified, the court would consider a custodial sentence.

Saleem Khan, defending, told the court that his client, who claims Universal Credit, and suffers from diabetes, heart problems and poor mental health, would be unable to do unpaid work. The court issued a driving prohibition of 8 months, and ordered Jarvis to pay a £200 fine, an £80 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.
