Two brothers have been charged with dangerous driving offences after an incident at a union protest in Cumbria.
The protest was taking place outside the main gates of Sellafield Power Station on Wednesday, September 17. However, it was disrupted when 55-year-old Michael Reid received serious head injuries and bone fractures, allegedly caused by the dangerous driving of local farmer Craig Fawcett.
Fawcett, 50, was driving a Polaris Ranger in the vicinity of the protesters at around 8:54 am. He has appeared in court charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Another man was treated in hospital for less serious injuries.
Fawcett’s elder brother, Albert Darren Fawcett, 52, was driving an Isuzu truck outside the Sellafield gates at 8:49 am, five minutes before the incident involving his brother. Appearing in court alongside his brother, he has also been charged with dangerous driving. The district judge has directed that their cases should be dealt with together at Carlisle Crown Court, where a formal plea and trial preparation hearing will be held on October 20. The men have been bailed and must reside and sleep at the addresses given to the court.
