33-year-old Curton Bolton has been fined and given a drink-driving ban after pleading guilty to drink driving.

On July 26, he was questioned by police at a petrol pump after they had observed his erratic driving on the A590 near Ayside. His breath contained 43 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, which is 8 micrograms above the legal limit.

Appearing in South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on 4 September, Bolton was fined £900, and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £360. He was also given a 12-month driving disqualification for the drink-driving offence. Bolton already had three points on his licence for an earlier offence of driving without due care and attention.

Bolton, a self-employed electrician, told the court that a driving ban would have a serious impact on his income. They nevertheless imposed the 12-month ban, although he was offered a place on a drink driving course, which, if completed, would reduce his ban by 12 weeks. Bolton represented himself in court.
