At a hearing on August 26 at Bath Law Courts, 43-year-old Kelly Stubbs pleaded guilty to breaking a variable speed limit on the M4.
On August 31, 2024, Ms. Stubbs, of Swindon, was driving between Junctions 19 and 20 on the M4 when a speed camera detected her vehicle breaking the speed limit. The court was told that her Vauxhall Mokka Ultimate Turbo was travelling at 72mph although a 60mph variable speed limit was in place at the time.
Appearing in court almost a year after the offence, Ms. Stubbs had 3 penalty points added to her driving licence. She was also ordered to pay a fine of £146, a surcharge of £58 and costs of £110.
Variable speed limits are displayed on gantries above the road, and drivers must be sure to observe and comply with these restrictions. Failure to do so can result in points being added to a driving licence, and with improvements to speed camera technology, there is an increased likelihood of being caught.
Drivers need to be mindful of totting up rules, whereby accruing 12 or more licence points in a 3-year period triggers a mandatory driving disqualification of at least 6 months duration. Losing the ability to drive, even for just a few months can be devastating for many people’s way of life.
