Driver fined after being caught by Welsh speed camera

09/08/2025

The importance of carefully observing speed limits on motorways was highlighted by a recent case heard in Cwmbran Magistrates Court, when a driver was fined a total of £300 for speeding on the M4 in Wales.

Clare Schreiber, 61, of Enstone, Oxfordshire was driving at 59mph on a stretch of the motorway near Newport on August 22nd, 2024. At the time, there was a 50mph speed limit in force on that part of the road. Her speed was recorded on an automatic speed camera, and she was subsequently served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution. At the court hearing, Ms. Schreiber was fined £150, and ordered to pay £90 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge. She also had three points added to her licence.

While the general speed limit on UK motorways is 70mph, there are sections of motorway where lower speed limits apply. Additionally, speed limits on these roads can be variable, with current limits displayed on gantries above the road. It is vital not to get caught out by these variable limits. Under the totting up rules, drivers can find themselves subject to a mandatory disqualification after accruing 12 or more points within a three-year period.
