A 78-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a collision at a bus stop in the Longsight area of Manchester
At around 8:10 pm on Monday 9th June, police in Manchester were called to a bus stop in the area, where a driver had collided with a bus stop and a commercial property, killing a pedestrian. The accident occurred on Slade Lane, near the junction with Portland Road.
Three fire engines from Gorton and Ashton fire stations were deployed and arrived at the scene shortly after the accident, along with police and paramedics.
The driver was arrested shortly after, and taken into police custody where she was interviewed about the offence. The case will be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision. She had lost control of the vehicle knocking down a 64 year old man and then continued to drive into the bus stop and nearby shop. The 64 year old man subsequently died from his injuries.
The accident caused considerable damage to both bus stop and shop. A massive clear-up was needed to remove the completely wrecked bus stop and clear away broken glass and other debris from the road and pavement.
