Wirral man sentence for dangerous driving offence

03/06/2025

At a hearing in Liverpool Crown Court, a man from Neston was given a suspended prison sentence for causing death by dangerous driving.

On May 28, 2025, Ian Ashworth, 61, of New Heyes, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. At an earlier hearing, he had pleaded guilty to causing the death of a 68-year-old woman and causing serious injury to an 81-year-old man as a result of driving without due care and attention. He was also handed a 2-year driving disqualification and will need to undergo an extended retest before he can resume driving.

At approximately 9:05 pm on August 14, 2023, Ashworth was driving his vehicle down Thorton Common Road in Wirral when he crossed over the central white lines and collided head-on with a Ford Fiesta travelling in the opposite direction. Both the driver of the Fiesta, an 81-year-old man, and his passenger, 68-year-old Christine Jones, were seriously injured. The man recovered after a lengthy stay in hospital, but Christine Jones died from her injuries a few days after the accident.

Christine’s family issued a statement offering their gratitude to the emergency services and the staff at Aintree University Hospital.
