A focused effort by police in Bicester, Oxfordshire, saw 89 vehicles pulled over for a range of offences, from mobile phone use to drug driving, on September 13.
Thames Valley Police are targeting the ‘Fatal Five’ driving offences, in a bid to reduce road deaths. Evidence suggests that drivers who commit these five offences are more likely to be involved in accidents leading to fatalities.
The five offences are careless driving (also known as driving without due care and attention), drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, using a hand-held mobile device when driving, as well as exceeding the speed limit.
Of the 89 drivers pulled over on this particular Sunday, 52 were recorded as exceeding the speed limit. Seven vehicles were identified as lacking a valid MOT certificate, and four drivers were caught violating seatbelt rules. Two offences relating to the use of mobile phones were recorded, and one driver was driving without a valid licence. Officers also stopped 13 vehicles with excessively tinted front windows. Two vehicles ended up being seized by police during the operation, and one person was arrested under suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs.
The crackdown, which involved officers from Thames Valley Police’s road policing team, provided a clear message to the public that the force remains committed to improving road safety.
