A 38-year-old man from Cambridge has been jailed for 22 months after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.
He had already been banned from driving and was subject to a suspended sentence following a conviction in March, also for dangerous driving.
On May 5th, the man was seen on CCTV sitting in a vehicle at Trumpington Park and Ride, and apparently taking drugs. Police officers arrived at the scene and tried, unsuccessfully, to block him in.
Escaping the police, he drove off into Trumpington village. During the ensuing police pursuit, his car reached speeds of up to 80mph in a 40mph zone and passed through a red traffic light. At one point, he attempted to reverse the Peugeot into the police car. He successfully avoided arrest, and his car was later discovered abandoned in Hobson Avenue.
On July 3rd, police officers saw the defendant driving a black Vauxhall Astra in a car park in Bar Hill. Once again, he drove off and evaded capture. He was found and arrested four days later, hiding in an abandoned caravan in Little Wilbraham.
Appearing in Peterborough Crown Court on August 19th, the defendant pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving, and two counts each of driving without insurance and driving while disqualified. The judge activated the suspended sentence from the March conviction, sending the defendant to jail for a period of 22 months and imposing a driving disqualification of three years and 10 months.
