Driver jailed for causing death of 31-year-old man

03/07/2026

On 24th June, a woman from Wigan was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court to six years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving.

On an icy morning in January 2025, the 25-year-old from Wigan, reversed her car out of an alley onto Pembroke Road. She began to drive the vehicle forward, but in the wrong direction down the one-way-street. CCTV evidence revealed that she had driven the wrong way down the same road only two days prior to the incident. Her car windscreen was severely frosted over, and she failed to see a man who was lying on the road, directly in front of her vehicle. The 31-year-old man had collapsed in the road some hours earlier.

Witnesses alerted her by shouting and sounding a car horn. Stopping just short of the prostrate man, but unable to see him, she continued to drive. Passing over the man, she then reversed over him, and drove forward over him once more, at which point he became trapped under the driver’s side of the car.

Emergency services were called by witnesses, and the victim was freed using a car jack, and then given CPR. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
