PC Jess Turnbull, 19, has died after being struck by a vehicle while investigating a road collision in Northumberland.

At 11:10 pm on Monday, June 8, PC Turnbull, who worked for the response policing team in Northumberland, was called out to investigate a crash on the A139 near Cramlington. As she left her marked police vehicle and walked toward the scene of the accident, she was struck by a passing Mercedes which was unconnected to the incident under investigation.

Ms Turnbull was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and the driver of the Mercedes was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was taken to hospital then released, but following Ms Turnbull’s death on Wednesday, June 10, he was rearrested for causing death by dangerous driving and bailed.

Northumbria Police have asked for any witnesses to come forward, and are particularly keen to view any relevant dashcam footage. In the interests of safety, they have asked that floral tributes be taken to the police headquarters in Wallsend, and not left at the roadside.

Ms Turnbull’s family have asked for privacy following their tragic loss. Jess had begun working for Northumbria Police in September 2025, and was considered a dedicated and promising police officer by colleagues.
